How Side by Side finds the photos

Today: both on Day 1,000.

Mark your children in Life Tally, and it does the arithmetic above every morning. Your youngest is on day 1,011, so it looks up the day each older child was on day 1,011, finds the photos in your library taken on those days, and sets them side by side. If there isn't one on the exact day, it takes the nearest photo within three days and labels it with that photo's own day.

  • By date, never by face. It matches birthdays to the dates your photos were taken. No face is recognized and nothing is uploaded.
  • Your pick stays. If a day's best photo isn't the right child, choose another and Life Tally keeps your choice.
  • Line up today's photo. Take today's picture with the older child's faded over the viewfinder, and match the pose.
  • Every round day. Scrub back to Day 100 or Day 500, or open every round day at once as a ladder of pairs to send to the family.
  • On your Home Screen. The Side by Side widget shows the pair, and Siri answers “Show my kids side by side in Life Tally.”

Doing it by hand

You don't need an app to try it. Use the calculator to get the date, then search your photo library for that day and the days either side of it. It takes a few minutes per pair, which is why Life Tally does it every morning instead.

Questions

How do I find photos of my kids at the same age?

Work out the day your older child was exactly as old as your younger one is now: their birthday plus your youngest's age in days. The calculator above does it. Then look for photos from that date in your library. Life Tally does both for you every morning and puts the two photos side by side.

Does Life Tally recognize my children's faces?

No. It matches your children's birthdays to the dates your photos were taken. If the photo it picks for a day isn't the right child, pick another and Life Tally keeps your choice. Nothing is uploaded.

What if there's no photo from that exact day?

Side by Side takes the nearest photo within three days, and labels it with that photo's own day, so the numbers under each picture are always true.

Can I compare three or more children?

Yes. Every morning puts the youngest today beside each older child on the day they were exactly as old. The free app holds three people, you and two more; one purchase opens the roster for everyone.

Can I send it to grandparents?

Yes. Send the day as one picture, or every round day at once as a ladder of pairs: Day 100, Day 500, Day 1,000, side by side.
